JAC

Janjanbureh Area Council was established in 1935. Comprising of six constituencies and twelve wards, JAC is the third smallest LGA in terms of size, aside from Banjul and Kanifing. The LGA only represents 6.6 percent of the country’s population, with a total land area of 1,428 Km2.

According to the 2015/16 Integrated Household Survey (IHS), while the population of the LGA increased to 127,332 in 2013 from 107,212 in 2003, the Janjanbureh LGA only represents 6.6 percent (as depicted in figure 1 below,) of the country’s population, a rate that has been on the decline from 7.9 percent in 2003. Due to itssparse population distribution, the LGA records a population density of 75.1 in 2003, which further increased to 87.7 in 2013.

 

Total number of households in the LGA is 11,849 (Census 2013), with a mean household size of of 8.8 persons, higher than the national (6.9 persons), rural (8.4 persons) and urban (6.0 persons) averages (IHS 2015/16).

District level analysis of the population of the LGA reveal that Upper Fulladu West (44,796) and Lower Fulladu West (40,481) have the highest number of inhabitants (IHS 2015/16) while Niamina West, Niamina Dankunku and janjanbureh districts have the least numbers in terms of population
